What are Dust Mites?

House dust mites are microscopic organisms (less than 0.5 mm) that live in warm, humid environments — especially bedding, mattresses, pillows and quilts. They feed on dead skin cells, body oils, and thrive in environments where moisture builds up. In Australia, the species Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus is common, especially in coastal regions.

They do not bite — but their waste, body fragments, and fecal particles are powerful allergens. When inhaled or in contact with skin, they can trigger allergic reactions, asthma, eczema, sneezing, itchy eyes, blocked noses, and disrupted sleep.

Why Is It Important to Protect Against Dust Mites?
Dust mites exacerbate respiratory issues such as asthma and allergic rhinitis.
Exposure at night is especially problematic, since your bedding is a concentrated habitat.
Reducing exposure improves overall sleep quality, reduces irritations and helps skin and nasal passage recovery.
